The expert review of the FOD will take place from 5 January 2026 to 27 February 2026. If you have expertise in this field and would like to contribute to the review, please register online on the IPCC website by 13 February 2026.

About the Methodology Report on Inventories for Short-lived Climate Forcers

The report follows a decision adopted at the IPCC’s Forty-ninth Session in Kyoto in 2019, which called for the creation of a dedicated methodology for short-lived climate forcers. The outline for this work was approved at the Sixty-first Session in Sofia in 2024.

After a global call for nominations in 2024, Coordinating Lead Authors, Lead Authors, and Review Editors were appointed from governments and observer organizations. They are currently preparing the First Order Draft, which will undergo extensive expert review to ensure scientific balance, rigor, and broad representation.

Role of Expert Reviewers

The expert review of the FOD is a key element of the IPCC assessment process. The purpose of this expert review is to help ensure that the report provides a balanced and comprehensive assessment of the latest scientific findings. The IPCC Procedures state that the expert review process shall be objective, open and transparent, with a wide circulation that aims to involve as many independent experts as possible in the IPCC process, seeking a range of views, expertise, and geographical representation. In addition, the review shall be undertaken by experts nominated by governments and observer organizations.

Confidentiality

Please note that the First Order Draft is a confidential document. It must not be distributed, cited or quoted. Content from the draft may not be reproduced in any form, including on social media or in other public fora. Access to the draft is granted only after completing the registration process and agreeing to the terms of review, including the confidentiality of the draft and review materials. These materials are provided solely for the purpose of the review.

Additional Information

Information on the general IPCC review process can be found in Appendix A to the Principles Governing IPCC Work. More background on the Special Report 2027 Methodology Report on Inventories for Short-lived Climate Forcers and the wider AR7 cycle is available at ipcc.ch.
