Excursion of the young geomorphologists (SGmS)
Europaweg between Herbriggen and Randa (VS) 1 & 2 September 2017
The representatives of the young geomorphologists of the Swiss Geomorphological society organize a one-day excursion. The excursion will take place in the Mattertal valley in Valais, between the villages of Herbriggen and Randa. The interest of the region relies on the high sediment transfer activity linking periglacial and glacial areas to the valley bottom 1000 meters below. The aim of the excursion will be to visit both the upper parts of the torrential catchments in order to identify and discuss about the main sediment sources, and the outlets where the high torrential activity induces mitigation measures and infrastructures. Topics covering periglacial geomorphology, slope movements activity, debris flows and natural hazards will be covered. The visited sites will be presented by young researchers with the idea to open discussions between the participants.
