The 2026 edition was held in Karlsruhe from 13–17 May. As in previous years, SGM supported Swiss participants with travel grants and contributed €500 to the local organising team.

Below is a short report by Emilia Clauss, one of the Swiss students who participated in the event:

For this year’s StuMeTa, we had the opportunity to travel to Karlsruhe at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) on Wednesday evening. After a warm welcome at the station, we got to know other students from Germany and Austria who share our enthusiasm for meteorology over some delicious pizza. Unfortunately, the weather was less than enthusiastic and accompanied us throughout the weekend with persistent rain.

On Thursday, a variety of fascinating talks gave us an insight into the different research groups at KIT and their respective fields of research. After a delicious lunch, we had the chance to get hands-on in various workshops, where we could, for example, design our own weather stickers, visit the KITcube from the NAWDIC measurement campaign, carry out our own dust analyses using the ICON-ART model, and much more. In the evening, the sun made a brief appearance once more before we set off together to explore the various bars in Karlsruhe.

Friday was set aside for full-day excursions. In smaller groups, we were able to explore the Karlsruhe area by bike or on foot, go paddling on the Rhine, visit museums, tour the German Weather Service (DWD) in Stuttgart, or enjoy tarte flambée in Strasbourg. In the evening, we all got together again for a BBQ, where we could chat about our day over halloumi and grilled vegetables.

Following further guest lectures on Saturday and a poster session where students had the chance to present their own projects and work, StuMeTa was slowly drawing to a close. Last but not least, the famous closing party took place before we set off back to Zurich on Sunday morning, tired but with lots of new and exciting impressions and new acquaintances.

Finally, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the SGM for the financial support towards our travel costs! This helped make it possible for us to meet so many people who share the same fascination and led to a variety of unforgettable experiences. Thank you!
