Time

16:30 - 17:30

FreshProjects are collaborative research projects for young limnologists in Europe. The projects are organised by the EFFS together with EFYR and supported by the associated limnological societies. Benjamin Misteli leads the latest FreshProject EUPHORIA and was already a participant in the last two FreshProjects. In his presentation, he will report on the latest news from past projects, introduce the new FreshProject and share his personal experiences - including the challenges and insights that have significantly shaped his career.

FreshProjects: Success Stories from Early-Career Limnologists Collaborating Across Europe

Benjamin Misteli, WasserCluster Lunz

EUROPONDS:
Together with 67 other Early Career Researchers (ECRs) from 16 European countries, we studied emerging insects from ponds, analyzing their biomass exports and fatty acid compositions.

PhytoPlastic:
“Life in plastic, it's fantastic” – While plastic is a well-known pollutant in aquatic ecosystems, did you know it can also serve as a habitat for phytoplankton? This question was tackled by 45 ECRs in a large-scale lake experiment.

EUPHORIA:
The climate is changing, and plants are adapting to these shifts. While phenological changes are well studied in terrestrial environments, little is known about macrophytes. Launched in early 2025, EUPHORIA addresses this research gap through dedicated sampling and a citizen science approach. Our team now includes 115 ECRs from across Europe.

As a former participant in EUROPONDS and PhytoPlastic and now one of the PIs of EUPHORIA, I have gained invaluable insights into the FreshProjects and witnessed its significant impact on my career. I want to use this opportunity to not only share the latest news from the FreshProjects, but also share my personal experiences, learnings, and challenges and why I believe that FreshProjects are important for ECRs in Switzerland and the rest of Europe.
